When you arrive at someone’s home, kula nuwun is a familiar and respectful way to announce yourself. It is less a formal password than a gentle “excuse me, may I come in?”
Let your host lead
You may hear monggo, an inviting “please go ahead” or “come in.” In a meal, a host may encourage you to eat before they do. A warm matur nuwun (thank you) and an unhurried response show that you noticed the welcome.
Make room for other people
In a busy house or market, nuwun sewu can soften an interruption or a request for space. If you make a mistake, pangapunten (excuse me / sorry) is useful and sincere. These phrases work best with the same patience and attention you would bring to any introduction.
